In the southern shadows of Ellis Island's Great Hall, forgotten by history and ill-equipped in its battle with nature, I came upon the ruins of a vast hospital: the contagious-disease wards and isolation rooms for the people whose spirits carried them across oceans but whose bodies failed them, just inches from Paradise. What I was obsessed to do, almost as if I was chosen to do it, was document the light and the energy and living spirit of this place. I added no light of my own, nor any artifice of the photographic craft. I wasn't simply interested in graphics born from the patina of ruin. I just wanted to record the place as I found it."

"I photographed the decay of a dinosaur. It was a vast sculpture of wreckage in deafening silence, about to vanish into memory. The dinosaur was a massive disintegrating monument to America's industrial civilization. Bethlehem Steel. Here, in the scorching glow of Bessemer furnaces, the steel was forged to build the Empire State building. To float above the Pacific in the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Hudson, in a bridge they named for George Washington. In those furnaces banked along the Lehigh River, the steel was made for guns on battleships in two World Wars, and if the I-beams of Bethlehem Steel were removed from New York City, 80% of its skyscrapers would fall. A colossal monument to America's industrial age."
