In 1969, Richard Nixon became president, the Vietnam War continued as did protests against it, the Stonewall Inn was raided in New York leading to gay-rights protests, Charles Manson led a cult to murder five people, man reached and walked on the moon, Senator Edward Kennedy was embroiled in the Chappaquiddick Affair, Midnight Cowboy was one of the top films, rock and roll featured numerous ground-breaking performers, Woodstock stunned the world with three days of music and anti-establishment statements, and the New York Mets went from worst to first.
